Border Crossings
Since 2005 I’ve been buying Border Crossings Magazine without fail. Four times a year I wait in anticipation for my next issue and all year round I pour over them, smelling the pages, running my hands over them, devouring articles and feasting my eyes on the imagery. I once heard John Brown call himself an ‘image slut’, and I think I am one too.
Today is my day off (I started a new job last week which requires work on Saturdays, so I have Sundays and Mondays off) and I found myself sifting through some old issues. Here are some of my favourite articles and artists:
I loved this spread so much I had it open in my work space while I was painting. Yes, that’s linseed oil at the top.
This guy has stayed with me for a long time…
I can’t resist posting a few of his works.
One of my favourite issues.
I finally saw Even Penny’s work in the ‘flesh’ this spring at the AGO. Incredible.
…and one of my favourite painters….
These are beautiful photographs of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. I find them so painterly.
…who is on this month’s cover…I first heard of her in 2007 when, in her early 20′s I believe, her work got bought up by Saatchi. She’s a bit of a self-taught,- young, -provocative -and all the rest- artist but boy can she draw.
Another of my favourite issues….
Hands down, one of the best artist interviews I have EVER read.
This photo doesn’t do her justice. I would LOVE to see her paintings in real life. They are deliciously skillful and beautiful. She is one of the most talented painters, and an extremely smart woman.
Encaustic painter Tony Scherman. Exquisite.
The most beautifully painted shrimp I have ever seen.
I can’t leave out Shary Boyle. “I hope the painting and the colours are seductive becuase I believe in putting things in the world that have pleasure in them”. (Border Crossings, issue 102 pg. 87)
These are acrylic paintings – amazing.
Leonard Cohen’s self-portrait drawings…also an interesting interview…
…some more….
I love the painterly-ness of these. I believe the oil on myler gives it that effect.
This is a detail. I looked at this spread for a looong time. This spring, I saw her collages in the AGO. Stuff I can’t peel my eyes away from.
Another detail…
I studied her inside out in year 3…part of the Automatists….
…one of my favourite painters of ALL TIME.
Love her figure painting…
This month’s issue.
A terrible photograph of a beautiful work.
I mean, really, you can think ‘gross’ all you want. But they are exquisitely rendered.
And so ends, my tribute to Border Crossings.

I LOVE mags. Love them. I love that you have collected these, every issue for four years. And I especially love how much you appreciate them. I think another subscription should be in the works for you at Christmas!
(Er-remind me!)
I’d like to look through them, especially at the ones you like that you posted here, in person. I did check out some while I was there last time.

I will remind you! I started collecting Canadian Art, too. By mistake. I was at ‘Word on the Street’ last year and they were selling subscriptions for real cheap and giving away a really nice re-useable shopping bag with your purchase.
