Mr. P. Physh, detail

Mr. P. Physh, detail

For a few weeks now, I’ve been working on a painting of my puffer fish that I sketched awhile ago. Since I started my new job at the gallery, I’ve been toiling away at it on my weekends, however, it’s been giving me an enormous amount of difficulty and has been no fun at all.

Today, I decided to stop being so finicky about the whole thing, and started to play. I forgot about trying to make the fish a fish, and instead concentrated on the feel of the paint and the oil, and on capturing the truly ridiculous portrait of Mr. P. Physh who now floats in a sea of fleshy pink. This makes him more monstrous and hilarious than ever.

Finally, I like where it’s going.

More updates on this soon.

Oh, but I want to see MORE!!! This detail, the texture, everything, is AWESOME!! I’m so glad you’re playing and things are more enjoyable. That’s what art is supposed to be, among other things, isn’t it? Play?

I can’t wait to hang some more of your stuff in my house!

PS. Mr. P. Physh?? HAHAHAHAHA!! The P is for Puffer, I assume?

We just bought three fish today for the pond outside, and now we’re planning on getting an aquarium again for inside. I’m EXCITED!!

Thanks, I can’t wait to continue. I’ve got tonnes of ideas in the works.

P. Physh (Puffer Fish) is actually what Andrew started calling him. We both have this need to personify everything. We’ve got a whole bunch of animal characters in the works. It’s pretty funny.

You should get some frogs too!

You should have seen the African bullfrog they had at the store! I don’t want to buy frogs, though, when there’s a marsh behind us. It seems weird. I’m hoping they will just be attracted to the pond.

You would have loved the horny tortoise thing they had, too. He just sat with his head raised to the sky, his giant maw open. Otherwise, he could have been dead. It was so utterly hilarious to me, him being totally still but with his huge beak open, that I still laugh picturing him.

Tons of ideas? Really?

Sob!! Where are my tons of ideas?

Ahahaha! Tortoises are hilarious. They are on my list of ridiculous, monstrous animals to paint. Along with the praying mantis, frogs, etc. Annie Dillard writes a whole page on the female mantis gorging on her mate WHILE…mating…a different kind of eating, entirely.

I could say something rude, but I’ll just leave it at, um, EWWWW!
